David Carter MBE
David joined the choir in 1961, beginning as a second tenor but during the late Gwyn Morris period he switched his vocal talents to the top tenor section. He performs many solo performances, sings duets with our guest sopranos and is presently master of ceremonies at all of our concerts. He has served many roles the on the choir committee, including Choir Chairman, and has always been heavily involved in the successes of our Annual concerts.
Apart from being a life member of the Apollo, David’s interest in the local music scene is extensive. He is Vice-President of Stockton Stage Society, for whom he has performed many leading roles in musicals and operettas, and is the main sponsor of both the Stockton Music Festival and the Shine Music Festival.
Away from music David is Chairman and Managing Director of Carter Steel, President of Yarm Cricket Club and co-founder of Yarm School. He was awarded an MBE in the 2018 Honour’s list for his services to the community on Teesside.
Vic started singing in 1941 in church choir at age six and later sang alto and bass in Middlesbrough High School choir. During National Service in 1955-56 he sang tenor in Garrison church choir in Episcope, Cyprus and also local choral society performing with Middle East Air Force band at military bases.
After demob. he joined the Apollo Choir in November 1956 and six months later was persuaded to take on the roll of assistant secretary. Since then he has taken on various roles including Chairman in 1986-87 and began serving his second term of office as Chairman in 2011.
Apart from singing with the Apollo he has sung in two shows with Middlesbrough Operatic Society.
Vic enjoys a variety of sports and played rugby for Constantine College from 1952-1967 but now restricts himself to a leisurely game of golf, weather permitting.
David spent 34 years teaching cello, double base and singing for the Tees Valley Music Service, including conducting the Hartlepool Youth Orchestra and Hartlepool String Orchestra.
As a singer he has performed in Many operas, operettas, musicals, oratorios, choral works and concerts all over the North East of England. His many roles include Don Jose (Carmen), Alfredo (La Traviata), Turiddu (Cavalleria Rusticana), Macduff (Macbeth), Fernando (Cosi fan tutte), Vasek ( The Bartered Bride), Eisenstein and Alfred (Die Fledermaus), Danillo and Camille (The Merry Widow), Ravanel (Showboat) and Freddy Eynesford-Hill (My Fair lady)
Joining Rosedale Gilbert & Sullivan Society (now Tees Valley G&S Society) in 1975, he has sung all the Gilbert and Sullivan tenor leads but one, most of them more than once. David has conducted the TV G&S Society’s Christmas concerts for many years, more recently taking on the post of Chorus Master.
Elsewhere, David has been musical Director of Durham University Light Opera Group, Teesside Operatic Society (now Teesside Musical Theatre Company) and Opera Nova.
Jenny studied music at Edinburgh University and later in Wurzburg, where she occupied the position of Staff Accompanist at the Musikhochschule. She has performed extensively, both here and on the continents an accompanist and chamber musician. She enjoys teaching and accompanying various local choral groups. Our hope is that her partnership with David will take us through a more settled and successful time.
